The Tories biggest challenge at the next general election: Starmer isn’t Corbyn

The Tories biggest challenge at the next general election: Starmer isn’t Corbyn

The main driver of the GE2019 “red wall” gains was the then LAB leader One of the key factors about Johnson’s electoral successes is that they have happened when he’s been up against LAB opponents who subsequently became massive negatives for their party. Thus Boris beat Ken Livingstone for the London Mayoralty in 2008 and 2012 and his 2019 general election victory was against Corbyn who by then had been hugely discredited. If as looks increasingly likely neither the Tories…

The loneliness of the long-distance leader

The loneliness of the long-distance leader

Where is Team Starmer? Sir Keir Starmer has a lot going for him.  He is credible as a PM-in-waiting, which is more than can be said for his two predecessors.  He seems competent, thoughtful, consistent, honourable, and honest, which are not conspicuous strengths of our current PM.  Admittedly he is rather dull, and a poor public speaker, but overall voters think quite favourably of him; his net ratings were modestly positive in six out of the seven December polls. One…

As Trump struggles to hang on Biden extends his favourability lead over Trump to 9%

Gallup is reporting this afternoon that President-elect Joe Biden’s favourability rating has risen six percentage points to 55% since the election compared with his final pre-election reading. At the same time, President Donald Trump’s favourability has edged down three points to 42%. Biden’s current rating is the highest it has been since February 2019, two months before he declared his candidacy for president, when it was 56%. Trump’s latest favourability falls short of the highest of his presidency, 49% in April,…

Unlike WH2016 Trump’s opponent this time has strong positive favourability ratings

So far during this campaign PB has spent a lot of time looking at the voting intention polls but this is the first header on what is arguably a better indicator, the leader ratings for Trump and Biden. The RCP chart shows the gap between the net ratings that Biden is enjoying on favourability compared with those that that Trump is getting. The latest average has Trump on 54.4% unfavourable and 43.1% favourable. This compares with Biden who is getting…

Johnson gets negative satisfaction ratings from Tory party members

Johnson gets negative satisfaction ratings from Tory party members

Only EdSec Williamson fares worse One of the ongoing polling stories since lockdown began has been the decline of the PM’s leader ratings. Whether samples are asked about satisfaction, whether they approve, view him favourably or think he is doing his job well the polling trend has been in a negative direction for the man who led the party into a spectacular general election victory ten months ago. The above survey is the monthly one of CON members mounted by…

Sunak continues to defy gravity in YouGov’s favourability ratings

Sunak continues to defy gravity in YouGov’s favourability ratings

YouGov have just updated their favourability trackers and as can be seen the Chancellor continues to ride supreme although still a long way down from his net plus 49% just at the start of lockdown. He, of course, has been making many of the key lockdown announcements on things like the hugely expensive furlough scheme and, of course, the changes on VAT and last month the cheap meals offer. It is the way he is seen, as portrayed in these…

As Biden moves to evens on Betfair new Ipsos WH2020 poll has him leading Trump by 15% on favourability

There’s a new ABC News/Ipsos WH2020 poll out with its first leadership ratings since the end of the conventions. As can be seen above Biden has moved 46% favourable in the latest poll which is up 6% over three weeks ago. He’s also seen his unfavourable numbers decline. Trump has gone the other way. He’s slipped from 35% favourable three weeks ago to 30% in this latest poll. His unfavourable ratings have remained pretty constant. I regard leader ratings as…

Sunak still leads Starmer in “Best PM” polling but the gap is closing

Sunak still leads Starmer in “Best PM” polling but the gap is closing

We have referred before to this polling series from newbie pollsters Redfield Wilson which asks those sampled to choose between Starmer and Sunak as “Best PM”. The Chancellor has led throughout but as can be seen the gap is nothing like it was and is now at 3%. We have to take into account as well that for whatever reason R&W is just about the most Tory-friendly pollsters carrying out surveys at the moment and has been reporting bigger leads…
