But is he good value at 4/1?
Two developments during the day on the Labour leadership – the PH100 panel of MPs, senior political journalists, key party strategists and think tank leaders – came out overwhelmingly to say that Alan Johnson would pose the biggest treat to the Tories. A total of 70% of those who took part backed the health secretary.
At the same time on the betting markets Johnson moved into the favourite slot for the first time ahead, now, of Harriet Harman. PaddyPower make him 3/1, Ladbrokes 7/2 with Bet365 offering 4/1.
But the big question remains – are we going to see an early contest? My view is that there’s no value on Johnson until we get a clearer idea of where this is going.
Brown is making a big effort to regain the media narrative and doesn’t look like someone who is preparing to pack it all in.
