Nate Silver: Beware of polling in the primaries

March 2nd, 2012

Nate Silver’s 538 blog New York Times

Nate Silver, who runs the excellent 538 blog at the New York Times, has produced a lengthy analysis overnight on the performance of polls in the current primary season.

His chart above tracks the error in the polls and compares it to the number of days in advance of the election that they were conducted. Nate calculates the error by looking at how much the polls missed the final margin between the top two candidates.

His conclusion is that “the polls have been reasonably good in the last few days before the election” but “have been pretty awful at most points prior to about three days before the election“.

The challenge for the pollsters at every sort of election is that most voters don’t focus on what they will do until the final few days during which they face a barrage of communications from the contenders.

In this primary season we have seen dramatic surges at the last minute such as in Iowa when Santorum came out with 24% – his highest polling level was 18%.

Nate’s analysis is a timely reminder to punters especially ahead of “Super Tuesday” when ten states decide next week.

It also puts into context UK polling for the next general election which is due to take place 38 months from now.

includes the line ‘This disclosure raises the possibility for the first time that the Blair government colluded in a cover-up. At the time, according to former ministers, the Labour administration was anxious to keep on good terms with the Murdoch papers’

Oh dear, oh dear oh dear….

“Incidentally, has Harriet Harman made any comment about
    that?”

    Don’t be absurd – when
have Labour’s ‘feminists’ ever spoken out when it was one of their own doing the dirty?

    Prescott and Eric
Joyce abusing their positions of trust by bonking female workers will be
ignored as usual, although no doubt one of the Eagle sisters will accuse Cameron of
being ‘sexist’ if the subject is raised.

Given that on the day the journalist asked the question Cameron was doing PMQs and being photographed with the actress from Gavin and Stacey, that’s a tawdry new depth to sink to, even for you.

“although no doubt one of the Eagle sisters will accuse Cameron of being ‘sexist’ if the subject is raised.”

No problem.  He’ll just revert to type and tell her to “calm down, dear”.

I’ve been an intermittent member for about 15 years, Mike, but these days I usually only make it to the Cheltenham preview.

Back in the early nineties, the LRC meeting was one of the few and pre-eminent, but now they have become commonplace and mostly just an excuse for a lot of idle chat and a few beers.  Remember when Alan Potts was on the panel and he reeled off a string of winning tips for the Chases, including One Knight at 9/1?   Performances of that calibre are rarely seen, and getting rarer, but I did think Phil Smith was on good form.

Sorry, I haven’t read your articles but I will look out for them from now on.  I may even take issue with you, publicly, but all in good sport, of course.

Good luck at Cheltenham.   Will you be there?   I understand Mike and Marf will be there on the Tuesday.   Cheltboy, Shadsy and I will be there all week.   We’re incorrigible.

    Warm regards

    PtP

‘that’s a tawdry new depth to sink to, even for you’

    Marianas Tim does irony.

and that is the crux of the matter.  While everyone is distracted taking about who rode who the fact that this all happened on Labours watch, NI supported Labour to the hilt and constant parties of pyjamas and otherwise were ongoing. This all of course is conveniently forgotten.

I will again remind people when NI fell out with Labour or the other way round.http://www.guardian.co.uk/politics/2009/sep/30/the-tony-ripped-up-labour as evidenced in the photo belowhttp://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2009/9/30/1254326588199/Tony-Woodley-rips-up-the–001.jpg

    Meanwhile ……………..
a Labour MP that had an affair and beat up colleagues in the Houses of Parliament is hardly commented on.  Such is the sickness that Labour have instilled in this country I am wondering if we can ever recover from their poisonous legacy.

As Tony Blair said when he was doing his own bit for British comedy via the sketch at number 10 with Catherine Tate

    “Am I bovvered?”

Yes, Alan Potts. Absolutely tremendous. I was always a fan of his and I think he was on the panel two or three years running.

Not planning to go to Cheltenham this year even though I live just 50 miles away. Have been to GC last few years thanks to industry contacts where I used to work (Tote, betfair etc)

    Good luck at the track!

You and I must have been drinking the same beer last nite.

The horse in question is TETLAMI, not Trifolium.    Have edited Betting Post accordingly.

    [Watch Trifolium dot up now!]

Yes, must have been the London Pride!

Anyone looking to back Tetlami should look no further than Ladbrokes, one of the few firms offering NRNB on this race. They also happen to be offering the top price of 16/1. Personally I would not back it ew. Huge field but only pays 1,2,3. So I would go either 2pts win, 1pt place or 3pts win, 1pt place. But that’s just my view.
