Is Mitt just a little closer to the White House?

February 29th, 2012

UPDATED

NBC has now called Michigan for Romney – all the networks called Arizona for Romney almost as soon as polls closed.

“Scots believe their financial prospects and job security will worsen if the country becomes independent, a new opinion poll for The Times reveals.

The poll of 1,000 Scots by Ipsos MORI also shows that Scots believe that Alex Salmond’s plans to take Scotland out of the United Kingdom will lead to deteriorating economic conditions for the country.

The results of the survey reveal the scale of the challenge facing Mr Salmond and the SNP as they seek to convince Scots that independence will be good for them and their families.”

Surely this means that Mitt is the candidate. Can’t see a way back for the others now. Santorum had to win Michigan to be credible.

What ever my bets on Obama seem as safe as ever.

I’m just waiting for OGH to post a conspiracy thread on how Romney and the wicked GOP establishment stole Michigan from Santorum.

More good news for Mitt, apparently Karl Rove will raise over $200 million with his Super PAC this year, and the Koch Brothers have let it be known that they could be in for over $200 million.  It was widely expected that whoever the Republican candidate was, he would be outspent with an Obama warchest which could fill to $1 Billion, now things aren’t so certain.

To win by 20 points in Arizona, and manage to turn around Michigan despite a hostile media environment took some doing.  While Romney should congratulate his team, he should also send Santorum a bottle of champagne for raising issues like the pill, the questionable value of college education & the separation of church and state.  None of those things will be on the minds of the vast majority of Americans, who are seeing gas prices rising, their house value down and unemployment at near historic highs.

    You could be surprised.
Obama is far from the favorite he was in 2008.

I’d bet on Obama too, if the election were next week. But there’s a very long way to go.
Race could easily tilt towards Romney.
I’m usually pretty black and white. As in Michigan. I had doubts today, a little, but very ephemerally. I had to kick myself to buy Romney when he was trading at 50%, today, to buy him again — as my average was 75%…

Anyway, the better bet as of today is Romney.President around 30%. I can see it reaching 45% easily.

Romney drones, know your talking points.

Fox Economic Coverage Mimics GOP Strategy Memo

Steve Doocy is offering further evidence that Fox News acts as the communicationsarm of the Republican Party.

This morning the Fox & Friends host read directly from a “pundit prep” document provided to him by the Republican National Committee: “They said the three best ways to define the Barack Obama economy: the national debt, (which is skyrocketing), the unemployment (which is north of 8 percent), and gas prices”

On topic, yes, Romney is a fraction closer to the White House.

I said yesterday that this GOP primary campaign is like one of those cup ties between a mid-table premier league side and some plucky League One outfit, where the premier league team is 1-0 up midway through the second half, having missed half a dozen opportunities to put the game to bed and therefore still vulnerable to being hit on the break.

The clock has now ticked on to 70 minutes.  No further score.

Before jumping to the conclusion that the narrowness of Mitt’s victory indicates a lack of support among Republicans, it might be worth a few thoughts about how many of the votes for Santorum in Michigan’s Republican primary were actually cast by republicans who want him to win and how many were cast by Democrats hoping to improve Obama’s chances.

Lead item on the CNN website’s election page is the campaign by some Democrats and liberals to get their voters to crossover and vote Santorum.

Examples of quotes from the news item:

“Democratic stagiest Joe DiSano has been on an active campaign to get Democrats out for Santorum in effort to hurt Romney. He recorded a robo call and has sent tens of thousands of e-mails to Democratic voters encouraging them to go to the polls.”

“DiSano said Tuesday he had 14,000 commitments from Democrats to vote for Santorum, all from the robo calls and e-mails he has sent.”

“A longtime liberal radio host asking Democratic listeners to vote for Rick Santorum in Michigan’s Republican primary told CNN Tuesday he loves making mischief.

After spending nearly all of his three hour program encouraging Democrats to get out and vote for Santorum Tuesday, Tony Trupiano made no apologies for his behavior.”

One Democrat who had followed this advice despite loathing everything Santorum stands for said she felt like she had made a “deal with the devil.”

Personally I wish there were some way to ensure that all the Democrats who used their vote in this way had to live in the alternative future in which Santorum were elected in November, without the same result being inflicted on everyone else.
